Do you have Type 1 Diabetes and/or Lupus? Share your Story in the Comments!

My journey is just beginning. I’m going back to work again after having been diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes and Lupus. I hardly know what to expect. I constantly think to myself, “How are people going to react?” or “How will I and my body react?”

Whenever I wake up, it all feels like it was just a dream; that nothing is wrong. I swing my legs over the bed and stand on my two feet before the dizziness takes over. Instantly, I reach for my blood sugar monitor. I’m pricking my finger, squeezing out a drop of blood and praying that it’s not low blood sugar. Rather, that it’s all been in my head or that it was just a bad dream but it’s not. My blood sugar monitor reads 36.

Due to my conditions, I have to check my sugar levels 8 to 12 times throughout the day. My doctor suggested I use Freestyle Libre, a glucose electric meter which provides an easier way to monitor your sugar levels but my insurance won’t cover it. I have looked for support from groups and churches but haven’t had any luck yet.

For now, I’m preparing to face work again after my diagnosis. I have adopted a better eating plan and have begun exercising more. I still haven’t gotten the hang of finger pricking but I have family who loves me and I will get through this.
